Ginseng is one of the most popular herbs in the entire world. It has many medicinal uses, such as lowering cholesterol, strengthening the nervous system, lowering blood pressure, increasing blood circulation to the brain and many, many more.
The popularity of ginseng isn’t a fad. It’s been used in North America for hundreds of years. In fact, ginseng helped finance the American Revolution. You can earn extra cash growing ginseng quite easily. Ginseng is not a particularly hard herb to grow, but it does take some time to learn how to grow ginseng. After about five or six years your ginseng roots will be ready to sell. In the meantime you can sell ginseng seed and rootlets to make an extra income. But remember, don’t let the time it takes to grow ginseng scare you away. Once your ginseng is mature and ready to harvest, you can make a lot of money. Seed is selling for about $150 a pound. After a few years of growing ginseng, you should have about 100 pounds of seed each year for every half-acre of ginseng you’ve planted. That same space of land should have about 500 pounds of roots, which are selling for $300 to $600 a pound. Two and three year old rootlets can also bring a good amount of money your way. So after six years of growing ginseng, your half-acre ginseng garden could be worth over $100,000. Now that’s a cash crop worth tending!
Best of all, there is no huge time commitment necessary to start ginseng farming. If you have a few hours a week you should have enough time to be a success. Your ginseng will need care and attention as it grows. You’ll want to keep an eye out for disease and pest problems. To combat these, only use organic matter, such as yellow sticky traps for pests. To make sure your ginseng grows up healthy and strong, remember to stick to only organic matter, such as leaf mold and compost.
You can earn some nice extra cash growing ginseng in your backyard nursery. You don’t need several acres to do it either. In fact, after six years you can make over $100,000 with just a half-acre of land. You can sell roots after the fifth or sixth year. Plus you can sell rootlets and seed after just two years.
