Many stay-at-home moms feel conflicted. They love their duties at home. They know they provide a valuable service to their family. But still, many would like to make some money, would like to contribute to their family’s finances. If only there was a business they could run from their home. Maybe something they could even get the kids involved in. Is there such a business? There sure is: growing garlic for profit.
Growing garlic for profit might sound like an odd business at first, but let’s look at the numbers. According to the Fresh Garlic Association, garlic is the second most-used spice in the entire world, just behind pepper. In America alone, over 300 million tons of garlic was consumed last year. This garlic has to come from somewhere, so why not your backyard garden?
Growing for profit is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Far from it, as garlic, like most plants, takes several months to grow to full maturity. But it simply is a great and fun way to make money for any grower.
As a stay-at-home mom, you probably have a lot of tasks to do. Getting the kids to school, making lunches, cleaning the house, doing laundry, paying bills and so on. You’re plenty busy as it is. So how would you possibly have time for a garlic growing business? Chances are you do have plenty of time. Growing for profit does not require a full-time commitment. You can schedule it around the other things you have going on. Your garlic will need some care and attention, but it’s probably something you can fit with your normal schedule. Do you have 10 hours a week to spare? That’s less than an hour and a half a day. If so, then you have enough time to be a successful grower.
And did you know it’s a great way to get the whole family involved? Gardening is a fun way to get people out of the house, away from the TV, computer and video games. It gets people outside enjoying nature, and learning a valuable skill. Your kids will love watching the garlic grow. They’ll learn about taking care of something. How to plant bulbs correctly. How to give a plant the right amount of water. How to keep the soil healthy. All valuable skills in life.
When you’re ready to sell your garlic, you have many options. How about the local farmers’ market? Or maybe you’d like to try mail-order sales or selling directly to supermarkets. You could always sell to produce brokers who then resell your garlic to supermarkets and other retail outlets. Or maybe you’d like to make value-added products using garlic, such as a natural flea repellant for dogs. There simply are several ways to sell your garlic. Best of all, your kids can become your co-workers. They can learn valuable skills in business and how to sell a good product.
Farming garlic could be a perfect way for a stay-at-home mom with a love of gardening to make a nice income, while still having plenty of time to complete your other duties. Plus, you can get the whole family involved. Before long you could be making the kind of money you’ve always wanted, while having a lot of fun doing it. To learn more, read Golden Harvest.
