The popularity of herbs is on the rise. In particular, ginseng has continued to be one of the most profitable herbs you can grow. After a few years, your ginseng crop can be worth quite a lot of money, with current prices as high as $600 a pound. Plus, you can make even more money if you sell seeds and rootlets. There are simply many ways to make good money growing ginseng for profit.

Ginseng has proven to be one of the most effective medicinal herbs. It’s often used to treat illnesses, increase vitality, boost the immune system, increase blood circulation to the brain, strengthen the nervous system, reduce cholesterol and much, much more. Ginseng has been used for thousands of years. Did you know that ginseng even helped to finance the American Revolution? Mentions of ginseng even appear in George Washington’s diaries.

It’s important to know that ginseng will not make you money overnight. Like other herbs it can take awhile to grow to maturity, but if you are a patient grower you could see a big payoff in just a few years. So let’s look at some of the numbers. If you plant a half-acre of ginseng, it’ll start producing seeds around the third year. It won’t be a lot at first. A half-acre will produce about twenty pounds of seed after the third year. However, after the fourth year that number will jump to fifty pounds of seed. By the fifth and sixth years, you can expect 100 pounds of seed or more. So how much money does that mean? Currently, seed is selling for about $150 a pound. After the sixth year, that half-acre of land should produce about 500 pounds of roots, which can then be sold for $300 to $600 a pound, on average.

Now, let’s put all those numbers together. After six years, based on current prices, a half-acre garden can produce about $100,000 worth of seed and roots, which breaks down to about $16,000 a year.

As your ginseng grows, make sure to take good care of it. Add plenty of organic matter, such as compost or leaf mold. This will give the plants plenty of nutrients, and help them to avoid pest problems. Also, be sure your plants are growing in well-drained soil that has access to plenty of air circulation. This will also help the plants avoid disease problems.

When you’re ready to sell your ginseng, where do you sell it? You have many options. You can sell to local wholesale buyers or to ginseng brokers (who resell your ginseng, trying to find the best price for you). You can also ship to out-of-state buyers who often purchase for the export market. If you choose to ship to out-of-state buyers, be sure to package your ginseng like you would a fragile item.

Ginseng is one of the most profitable herbs you can grow. It’s perfect for the patient grower that loves seeing results after a few years. Within just six years time you can make $100,000, all from growing ginseng. To learn more, read Golden Harvest.
