You’d like to make a nice profit with your ginseng-growing business. It’s easy if you do it right. Here are some profitable ginseng growing secrets to get you started:
1. Buy good seeds
This sounds obvious, but is what holds back some growers. You want to be sure you’re buying top-quality seeds. Don’t assume that the most expensive seeds are the ones you should be buying. If you can, make sure you’re buying disease-free seeds. You also want to buy only stratified seed. Stratifying is a process that makes sure your seeds that are planted in the fall will sprout in the springtime.
2. Sell seeds and rootlets
It’ll take about five or six years to grow mature roots. In the meantime you can make a nice profit from selling seeds and rootlets. Those should be ready to go after just a few years. As far as rootlets go, you’ll get paid based on how old the rootlets are. For example, three year old rootlets bring more than two year rootlets, as they can be harvested sooner. Seeds are currently selling for about $150 a pound. In a half-acre of ginseng you can expect to grow about fifty pounds after the fourth year and one-hundred pounds after the fifth or sixth year.
Top-notch dried roots can bring you top dollar. Buyers will often break a few roots to test for dryness. They typically want to hear a crisp “snap!” To dry them naturally, in a covered place spread the roots out onto a screened rack. If good air circulation is not available, place a fan nearby, and keep it going for about two to four weeks and check regularly. If the ginseng root breaks with a snap, then it’s dry.
4. Fixing pest and disease problems
Your ginseng might encounter some pest and disease problems along the way. Remember that your ginseng needs good, healthy soil to grow in. The soil should have a pH between 5.0 and 6.0. Make sure your ginseng is growing in an area with good air circulation. As your ginseng grows, keep an eye out for pest and disease problems. It’s best to use only organic fertilizer and pest controls.
5. Dig at the right time
Be sure you’re harvesting your ginseng roots at the right time. The roots should be dug in August or September after the leaves have turned yellow and the tops have died down. Try your best to dig the roots out in one piece. Don’t damage the skin either. Before digging, loosen the soil around the roots with a garden fork. Use your hands to remove the roots.
